Abstract:As economies develop and population grows, energy demands increase substantially. The supply of fossil fuels is limited and will eventually run out. On the other hand, fossil fuels are not green sources of energy and contribute to Global Warming. Looking ahead, the next generation of energy technologies for global strategic plans will transition from fossil fuels --- coal, oil and gas, into renewable energy sources--- wind, solar, hydropower, bioenergy and tidal energy. Despite many successes of renewable energy, there are the critical questions to be answered: Why have the renewable energy economics not taken off? What will the business mode of renewable energy economics be? What are main challenges and barriers in renewable energy economics? Why will energy storages play a pivotal role in renewable energy economics? In this study, we will analyze and confront these key questions to examine the existing energy economic mode and renewable energy economic mode. Then, we will perform a techno-economic and environmental analysis of main energy storage systems using life cycle and value chain activities according to the primary end-user acceptance criteria: function, cost and reliability. We will investigate the feasibility of different approaches of energy storages how to achieve a competitive advantage of energy storage and conversion, which should outperform from its existing competitors, such as Internal Combustion (IC) engines and boilers, and present challenges and opportunities in energy storages (e.g., fuel cell and battery) technologies. The fuel cell industry must face the challenge of how to overcome their reliability barrier while batteries do how to reduce cost, aging and recharge time. This study provides a deeper insight to what main techno-economic barriers of fuel cell and batteries are at large scale deployment, and points out the needs and directions of research and development in renewable energy economic growth and will be beneficial for investors, students, public and policy makers related to renewable energy in evaluating and planning and decision-making.
